Medical Examiner releases cause of de-ath for Athena Brownfield

The full report on the dea*th of 4-year-old Athena Brownfield is available from the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

In January 2023, Athena Brownfield’s 5-year-old sister was discovered wandering outside her Cyril home by a postal worker.

OSBI agents arrested Alysia Adams, one of Athena’s caregivers, on two counts of child neglect two days after the search began. Authorities confirmed the next day that Adams’ husband, Ivon Adams, had been arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, on a first-degree murder and child neglect charge.

One week after the search began, Athena’s remains were discovered on a rural Grady County property. According to the final autopsy report, Athena’s body was discovered in a backpack.

Jasmin Brownfield, Athena’s mother, was arrested in May on two counts of child neglect by abandonment.

According to court documents, Alysia told authorities that Ivon allegedly beat Athena to de*ath before burying her on Christmas Day 2022.

The Medical Examiner’s Office, on the other hand, claims there was no evidence of physical lethal trauma.

The official cause of de*ath for Athena was “acute pneumonia complicating malnutrition.”

According to the report, Athena was in the third percentile for weight-for-size, weight-for-age, and stature-for-age growth charts.

Her screening revealed Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Human Adenovirus, Human Bocavirus, and COVID-19, in addition to pneumonia.

Her dea*th has been ruled a homicide.
